The Children's Shelter
Volunteer Project

A very special project was undertaken on a volunteer basis by the San Antonio chapter of NARI.  As an organization we are remodeling the abandoned Edith M. Brack administrative building on the Children's Shelter campus at 2939 W. Woodlawn to provide additional administrative office space to the managers of the Children's Shelters in the San Antonio area.

8/20/2005 - The demolition phase of the project progressed nicely as 24 people representing 8 NARI member businesses (McKenzie Roofing & Remodeling, 1-800-GOT-JUNK, Ferguson Bath & Kitchen Gallery, Dacon Roofing, Home Depot, Maverick Remodeling & Hughes Custom Flooring) labored under less-than-perfect conditions. The hot and dirty demolition work filled to the brim two 1-800-GOT-JUNK trucks with old carpet, ceiling tiles, cabinets, fixtures & insulation.

David Ratcliff of McKenzie Roofing & Remodeling, the project coordinator, said that “It was a tremendous start for the NARI building at the Children’s Shelter. This fantastic work day shows the heart of so many of the people in the remodeling industry.  It’s because of caring folks like this the children thrown into difficult situations may have a better start. Thanks to everyone who participated.”

A total of 81 man/hours were spent from 8:00am to 11:30am.  All carpet, ceiling tiles, cabinets & fixtures were removed.  Some ceiling tiles were reclaimed for use later in the project.  Much thanks to Ferguson Kitchen and Bath Gallery which turned out 11 volunteers for getting this project off to a great start.   Also thanks to 1-800-GOT-JUNK's Mark Klug for providing 2 trucks for the hauling off and disposal of the construction debris.
